Curious about the history of Sing for the Cure??

Sing for the Cure was commissioned 25 years ago, in 2000, by theTurtle Creek Chorale and Women’s Chorus of Dallas, both under the direction of Timothy Seelig. This powerful song cycle was created in partnership with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundationto honor those affected by breast cancer.

At the time, the AIDS crisis had devastated the gay male community, and the men of Turtle Creek Chorale wanted to give back to the women’s community — especially lesbians — who had shown unwavering love and care for those suffering from AIDS. Many men would have died alone had it not been for these women, who stepped in when even the healthcare system turned its back. In gratitude, this work was commissioned as a tribute to their compassion and a commitment to the fight against breast cancer.

Featuring music by ten renowned composers and a libretto by Pamela Martin Stewart, Sing for the Cure weaves together personal stories of love, loss, and resilience. Since its premiere, it has been performed by choruses nationwide, continuing to inspire, educate, and raise awareness for breast cancer research.

The work has been performed in its entirety three times in the past 25 years as a collaborative effort among multiple choral organizations. The Gay Men’s Chorus of Charlotte, the Women’s Chorus of Charlotte, and Carolina Voices are proud to be working together to bring the work back to the stage, and shine the spotlight on breast cancer and those affected by it.
